Monk's Kettle Description:
The first reason to visit this cozy, classic, and often packed tavern just off the Valencia Street strip is obviously the beer: the restaurant offers 24 draught and more than 120 bottles from craft breweries in Belgium, Germany and California, to name a few. Styles range from pilsners to porters, so aficionados and newbies alike can find something to like. The food, which falls into the upscale pub fare category, is surprisingly good. Not only are there beer-friendly favorites such as charcuterie and cheese plates, but there's also an addictive, buttery, giant pretzel served with whole grain mustard and a house-made cheddar-ale dipping sauce. For entrées, the sandwiches and burgers are all solid choices, especially a lamb burger topped with a cool, tangy cucumber-mint sauce, and a grilled-chicken sandwich that gets dressed up with Brie and bacon. More sophisticated fare includes a brined pork chop and grilled skirt steak, but keeping it simple might be the best way to go. Much like other restaurants might offer wine pairings, each dish on Monk's Kettle's menu gets a beer pairing suggestion. Servers and bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly, and willing to pour samples in teensy beer mugs.
