Gary Danko thrives at its perch at the peak of San Francisco dining. Along with a classy but comfortable ambience, delightful food and a 1,200-plus selection wine list with plenty of intriguing options, the restaurant has what many consider the best service in the city. Tasteful modern art adorns the walls, and light-wood touches and subdued brocade on banquettes mesh in serene style. Diners select from three, four or five prix-fixe courses. To fully appreciate the experience, opt for the tasting menu with wine pairing since the captains are well versed in the all-encompassing list. To start, consider the glazed oysters with osetra caviar, salsify and lettuce cream or the foie gras terrine with pear-chestnut compote, brioche and mâche salad. For seafood, don't miss the roast Maine lobster with potato purée, chanterelles, edamame and tarragon. For entrées, the guinea hen breast arrives with rosemary pork sausage, savoy cabbage, roasted grapes and bread dumplings, and seared filet of beef pairs with spätzle and butternut squash. The cheese cart requires exploration; it's a shrine that epitomizes Danko's obvious enthusiasm. Choose from the international artisan selections, or head straight to dessert. The chocolate soufflé with two sauces and the tableside flambéed pineapple with coconut-macadamia dacquoise and rum-coconut sorbet are standouts.
