Featuring a crisp décor of cream-colored leather armchairs and polished dark-wood floors, this long-sought, upmarket space's feel is clubby and inviting, thanks in large part to its professional and natural staff. Executive chef Jennie Lorenzo (Blackbird, Mirabelle, Ame) crafts a luxe, whimsical menu of New American and French flavors, favoring a subtle rusticity and featuring a relaxed pricepoint that might delight longtime Fifth Floor devotees. The modern, less formal attitude is showcased on the plate in fun adds such as precise, cubed "tator tots" that neatly accompany medallions of tender New York strip steak drizzled with a decadent smoked bordelaise. Artisan foie gras, cured in red wine for 48 hours and served with brioche, reminds diners that though Fifth Floor's direction may be leaning toward casual, not an ounce of its dedication to high caliber cuisine has been compromised. A tasting menu is paired to master sommelier Emily Wines's playful choices (not the other way around); her list features more than 1,500 bottles and a focus on small and unique international producers. Strong desserts include a mix of traditional French and American treats such as sumptuous beignets, popcorn-flavored ice cream, pear soufflé and almond tart. For a less involved experience, a casual lounge with food abuts the restaurant.
