Chaat Cafe Description:
South of Market now boasts the first San Francisco outpost of the East Bay's popular Chaat Café mini-chain. Fresh, bright flavors of India are served up in chaat dishes---India's word for snack. The star of the lunch rush is indubitably the naan wraps. With its crackling crisp bottom and soft spongy top, naan bread slips easily into the world of wraps. Here they are stuffed with lamb kabab, ground lamb, chicken, or paneer cheese and slathered in mint, yogurt, grilled onions and chili. As the afternoon ends, the order-at-the-counter madness transforms into casual table-service atmosphere. Crispy samosas starters are stuffed with cumin-spiked potatoes and served with a tangy garbanzo bean-tamarind-cilantro relish. The tandoor oven sizzles up salmon filet alongside the traditional chicken. Naan is now used to soak up every last bit of the roasted eggplant baigan bhartha, comforting dal soup and rich curries.
