Coda Description:
With its big open room boasting exposed wood beams, a slate-grey concrete floor and a sweeping bar, Coda is a nice venue---a lounge-y supper club kitted out like a stylish loft destined for cocktail parties and magazine spreads. For the nightly live jazz performances, there isn't a bad seat in the house. Food, on the other hand, features both hits and misses. Pastena in brodo was dominated by liberal lacings of truffle oil---in this case an overbearing perfume. However, fried chicken was succulent, its miso flavor present but balanced. Coffee-crusted pork loin smelled like a cup of Nescafé, but a side of Brussels sprouts and squash in sage butter saved the day, the fat wands of squash soft and sweet like thick-cut sweet potato fries. Coda's wine deal should be a draw all on its own: from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., the house tap wines are half-price (along with beers and some cocktails). Every week or so the owner drives around California to fill kegs with wines to sell by the glass and carafe, and passes along the savings to eager customers.
