The Brooklyn Café Description:
While you’ll never confuse this Sandy Springs eatery with a real Brooklyn Italian family hangout, it still has a lot going for it. This relaxed café offers Yankee transplants a bit of New York without the attitude, along with some good prices so that you can bring the family. Everyone starts with the great Italian bread made for dipping in the quality olive oil while they order the huge portions fit for an Italian family. Calamari, mussels or crispy polenta cakes on Gorgonzola sauce are good starters. We enjoy the gnocchi with butter and sage and the eggplant Parmesan, although we’d probably order it next time without the unfortunate basil orzo. Half orders are ample and reasonable, and small dishes are worthy light entrées, especially the excellent fig and walnut salad. Save room for the white chocolate bread pudding for dessert. Where did they get those wonderful strawberries in winter? The wine list segments choices into light-, medium- and full-bodied selections, and most are offered not only by the glass but also by the half glass, a perfect lunch-time pour. The café doesn’t take reservations but will put your name on a waiting list if you call ahead---do so 30 minutes before you go during the week and one hour on weekends.
