Former punk rocker and Guttermouth drummer James Nunn now helms the kitchen at Jimmy's Famous American Tavern, channeling his other great passion, food, into a lively gastropub. After ten years on tour, Nunn worked at Hollywood's Pig 'n Whistle, then jumped to Laguna Beach's French 75, before taking the reins at this hoppin' joint in Point Loma. Yachties and locals alike will go for the old school cocktails created by famed mixologist Ryan Magarian, like the Bees Knees, gin with fresh lemon and house-made clover honey syrup. While a few salads and lighter fish dishes can be found, it's hearty comfort and bar food that punctuates the menu: giant buttermilk- and dark beer-battered onion rings, Southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, Cajun peel-n-eat shrimp boil, ten-ounce burly JFAT burgers, and Zinfandel-braised ribs. The one single dessert is a crowd pleaser---especially with the small fry---gooey warm chocolate chip cookies smothered in vanilla bean ice cream and hot fudge with salty peanuts and whipped cream. An outdoor fire pit adds to the panache, and the bar scene inside is lively and fun with upbeat music, as expected from the rock-star chef.
