Soltan Banoo Description:
Cozy family restaurant with an array of homemade recipes. Beautiful inside and a comfortable patio.
Some years ago, owner-chef Mahin Mofazeli and her two daughters, Sanam and Roxanne, started the tiny Café Caspian across the street. Its popularity proved too great and thus the larger Soltan Banoo was born. This place continues to pack them in. Dining al fresco is particularly enjoyable. The Middle Eastern standards such as hummus, tabbouleh and baba ghanouj are all done competently, but we go straight for the ash anar---pomegranate soup with lentils, beans, wheat, spinach and herbs. Those with more delicate palates will love the chicken or mahi mahi kabab plates, both served with fragrant basmati rice and the lovely shirazi salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and cilantro in lemon and olive oil. More adventurous sorts will swoon for the fesenjoo---a rich, sweet stew with chicken, walnuts and pomegranate juice. Don't miss the wide selection of teas and bite-sized desserts, including Turkish delight and the cardamom-laced baghlava, pleasantly more subtle than the sometimes-cloying and differently spelled Greek version.
