Maranto's Mardi Gras New Orleans Description:
Much more a takeout establishment and market than a restaurant, Maranto's does offer table service in the middle of a room lined with shelves packed with New Orleans canned goods and cookbooks, as well as an incredible array of bottled hot sauces that numbers in the hundreds and spans the globe in its places of origin. The cooking is basically New Orleans Creole-Cajun of the honest, old-fashioned kind, unembroidered by Prudhomme-era fakery and over-spicing. For takeout, the muffaletta sandwich is outstanding; this Italian-inspired New Orleans classic consists of a round, quite flat bread (baked specially for Maranto's) generously stuffed with cold cuts, cheeses and a pungent olive salad. The small version (small compared only to its big brother) feeds two easily. For hot food, consider Big Easy classics as gumbo, shrimp Creole, seafood jambalya and red beans with rice.
