Gulf Coast Grill Description:
We hold a soft spot for University Heights' Gulf Coast Grill. Native San Diegans might be more familiar with dishes like the grilled vegetable quesadilla and crawfish chile relleno than with sweet corn hushpuppies or griddled catfish, but it didn't take long before they were returning for chef Martin Juarez's seafood gumbo, smoked chicken and andouille jambalaya or his Creole shrimp etouffée. For true Southerners, the chicken fried chicken (with garlic mashed potatoes smothered in country gravy) and the house-smoked pork chops (with peach chutney, veggies and more of those amazing mashed potatoes) are the real thing. A good starter arrives as bacon-wrapped scallops in a coconut, rum and pineapple cream sauce. Sunday Brunch calls for beignets and spinach oyster omelets, while a Georgia peach cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream sweetly caps off any hearty meal here.
