Karen Krasne's Extraordinary Desserts Description:
Known for its desserts, this contemporary, upscale bakery also offers a restaurant menu with salads, sandwiches and other cafe fare.
They do not take reservations, except for their Sunday European Breakfast, when reservations are recommended.
Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef extraordinaire Karen Krasne's Extraordinary Desserts is an industrial warehouse turned airy, stylish dessert bar. Located on the outskirts of Little Italy, it offers the perfect stop for a snack or decadent treat. Walk in and you are bombarded by beauty in the form of colorful fruit and chocolate concoctions all artistically garnished with edible flowers of every type. What distinguishes this menu from that of Krasne's Hillcrest flagship store is the array of bruschetta, panini, dips and spreads. Of special note are the carefully chosen cheeses; our favorites include the Ping Pong Surfing Goat (tasty with mango chutney) and the dolce Gorgonzola with rich, caramelized onions. The panini (a term used loosely here) are large and difficult to eat, but we do like the pairing of Serrano ham, buffalo mozzarella and red plum conserve. Beverages---such as hot white chocolate infused with lemon myrtle, lavender flowers and Madagascar vanilla bean---rival the legitimate dessert choices. As for those sweets, we favor the white Shangri La cake with guava and raspberry coulis and the warm, intensely chocolate bread pudding. Don't miss the impromptu shopping opportunity in the lobby---Krasne traveled the world to bring in gift items like exotic teas, incense, oils, candles and photo books.
