Crest Cafe Description:
Casual, with an Art Deco flair, this tiny spot sports a menu of mostly healthy fare, but also includes old-school diner favorites such as burgers, onion rings, casseroles and meatloaf. The bacon-buttermilk pancakes (called Midwestern Madness here) are a stroke of genius---fluffy, pillow-like flapjacks studded with crispy bacon and topped with two eggs. Also high on our list is the chicken-apple hash---an orgy of apples, bell peppers, chicken, eggs and potatoes. At lunchtime, it's hard to decide between the Crest Breastwich (broiled chicken stacked with fixings and served with salad and fries) and the turkey-Brie sandwich (a sophisticated grilled cheese with tangy-sweet grilled onions). Burgers are dependable choices, especially the Billy Burger (topped with mushrooms, onions and Swiss). Desserts mean homemade peach cobbler or deep-dish apple pie. The servers exude high energy and add to the upbeat vibe of this fun neighborhood eatery.
