Bleu Bohème French Bohemian Restaurant Description:
Philippe Beltran, who introduced (but has since left) Hillcrest's La Vache and South Park's Vagabond, has set down roots in artsy, eclectic Kensington. One would never recognize this former Fried Green Tomato space, for Beltran and the designers have transformed the grandmother's living room ambience into a rustic yet chic restaurant-wine bar. Service is gracious, not at all stuffy, giving the spot the neighborhood vibe for which they're striving. We love gathering with friends on the cozy wine bar side for the cheese and charcuterie plates---the ideal nosh to accompany great conversation. For dinner, we are smitten with the coq au vin, a true representation of the peasant bone-in chicken and wine dish with salty bacon and caramelized onions. The bouillabaisse doesn't skimp on the seafood ingredients, but is a tad overcooked. The filet mignon has good flavor (especially when dipped in any of the three accompanying sauces), but we wish it were seared on the outside. Desserts are merely routine; we'd like to see Beltran hire a proper pastry chef so we could pop in for after-dinner coffee and sweets.
