Scenic Loop Cafe Description:
Winner of the coveted Critics Choice Best Margarita award, 2004. A cozy Texas atmosphere and a very extensive menu including steaks, seafood, Tex-Mex, sandwiches, salads, and much more. Very kid-friendly to boot. Offers a variety of live music. Located at the junction of Scenic Loop Rd. and Boerne Stage Rd. just a few miles west of I-10 next to the Rose Palace.
Scenic Loop is a consciously country café that cozies up to show horse barns and caters to the George Strait set with appropriate entertainment. It's also clear that some bucks have been blown on the creation of the limestone-clad compound, though more might be invested in noise control; the lofty space is its own amplifier, and the classy carpets hanging about don't always diminish the din. Still, locals from both real ranches and gated ranchettes seem to appreciate the enormous portions, and the corn poblano soup even merits ordering in the large size. Tex-Mex influences abound in starters such as bacon-wrapped and cheese-stuffed shrimp with chipotle sauce and steak Puebla laden with garlic and jalapeños, but the old-fashioned chicken fried steak is a totally Texas staple. Some tony, seasonal specialties appear; a fruit-stuffed pork chop with pecan gravy and buffalo short ribs with cheesy polenta among them. To take it all back home---but with a twist---the upside-down apple pie with pecans riffs on the iconic dessert. Or perhaps two of them.
