Paloma Blanca Description:
The location in upscale Alamo Heights alone would put Paloma Blanca in a different category from the city's standard Mexican joints; the appearance on the menu of dishes with low saturated fat, carbs and sodium, not to mention celiac selections, only cements the impression. But street-food items such as the tacos al pastor, comparatively expensive as they may be, do lend an air of grittier authenticity. Earthy enchiladas San Miguel with mushrooms in a guajillo sauce also strike an opposing, but resonant chord in this swell setting that seems more suited to the guacamole prepared tableside, cream of chile poblano soup and snapper served in several sauces. Yet, contemporary creations can often fall flat, with the pollo half and half a case in point despite two different signature sauces, cilantro and chipotle. Either stick with the classics or order enthusiastically from the margarita menu sporting neighborhood names such as The Heights. (Or prime yourself beforehand with a visit to PB's neighboring wine bar, Vela.) At dessert time, you may ignore the chocolate version of the now-ubiquitous tres leches cake. Stick with the original here, too.
