Key West Cafe Description:
The only thing remotely nautical about Union Station, land-locked at the western edge of downtown, is the paddle-boat pool filled with enormous koi next to the old train tracks. Inside, where the Key West Café is located, it's a shopping mall that caters mostly to tourists. Perhaps that's why the eatery is so overlooked by most locals, with the exception of late-night theater crews and fans wandering home from nearby concert and sports venues. Still, the fish adorning the walls are impressive, and the framed Hemingway posters put one in the mood for seafood. This is a fish house, with peppery conch chowder, smoked fish salad, grouper sandwiches like those on the Gulf Coast and a reasonably authentic Cuban sandwich. The pricing on some of the more exotic meats, like alligator, reflects their rarity rather than the excellence of their preparation. The kitchen stays open until 2 a.m., the bar an hour later.
