Proving that casual eateries can be just as creative as their high-end brethren, Iron Barley's been heating up its oak-fired oven for satisfied diners for years. We've almost forgotten a time when barley paella seemed like a weird idea, and no self-respecting South City dweller would eat watermelon in a salad with red onions and vinaigrette. How times change. The touches of too-cuteness are easily forgiven with the first bite of the nicely smoky roast chicken or one of the nightly special soups. The eponymous barley isn't just some wise guy's joke; it's available on the menu as a side or as apple-studded barley pudding for dessert, the latter a nice rift on rice pudding. Choosing it, however, would make the diner forgo a blaster, a frozen cheesecake-ice cream available in various styles, all involving a little spicy-hot flavor to offset the sweet.
