Everest Cafe & Bar Description:
St. Louis' first Nepalese restaurant migrated westward from a plain storefront on the edge of downtown to a hipper stretch of The Grove. It's still simple, and it continues to exude true hospitality while educating diners about the cuisine. Those who are familiar with Indian or Pakistani food will find similarities to the Nepalese specialties. Chef Devi States added some of the most common dishes from his wife's homeland of South Korea as well. States tweaks some preparations to accommodate Midwestern palates---for one, momos are traditionally filled with yak meat. Midwestern farmers haven't discovered the lures of the yak, so here they're made with pork or are vegetarian. Expect many nicely spiced vegetarian main courses as well. Kheer, a rice pudding dessert, is made with coconut and cardamom, and is worthy of a seduction. Also located at 711 Olive St., 314-621-8533.
