Aya Sofia Restaurant Description:
St. Louis' first Turkish restaurant arrived dressed in red. Its warm dining room and gauzily draped booths look very different from most local Mediterranean-type dining spots. But the menu is not so very different, thanks to the Ottoman Empire's habit of spreading similar dishes through much of the surrounding lands. So it's hummus and tabbouleh, stuffed grape leaves and fried feta on the meze platters. The very acceptable beef-and-lamb döner is used across the menu, from salads to platters. The iskender, döner on a bed of pita with tomato and yogurt sauces, is better now that the authentic touch of a butter sauce has been added. Other Turkish classics---dolma, imam bayildi, izgara kofte---are likewise authentically cooked and served. The staff is knowledgeable, and the husband-and-wife team of chef Mehmet Yildiz and Alicia Aboussie blossoms with experience. Sommelier Jill Aboussie oversees the wine list.
