Atlas Restaurant & Lunch Room Description:
Tucked into a quiet neighborhood between the city's Central West End and Washington University, the Atlas continues to charm. It's run in the style of a true French bistro, with spouses Jean Donnelly in the front of the house, Michael Roberts in the kitchen and understated décor that includes photographs adorning walls. The house can fill up early on nights when there's activity at the Fox Theater or Powell Hall. As is typical of bistros, the menu is short and changes seasonally, sporting simple foods that are imaginatively prepared, such as rack of lamb with feta-eggplant fritters or breast of duck with sweet-and-sour cipollini onions. Salads also charm, and desserts wander in directions bound to intrigue (think lemon pudding cake). Try the marjolaine, hazelnut and almond meringue layered with crème blanche and dark chocolate. The wine list, too, is brief and to the point. The house is open until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights for dessert, appetizers, coffee and drinks, making this a good pit stop post-theater or a movie.
