What started out as a one-room corner tavern is now a large and sprawling series of strung-together rooms and bars, but it still feels cozy on cold nights or rainy afternoons. The décor is St. Louis Irish, with memorabilia of both cultures (but more Guinness and O'Casey than shamrocks and leprechauns). The vibe can be quiet or rowdy, depending on the night and the room where you're seated. McGurk's is the undisputed local leader in authentic Irish music, and its multi-level garden, with dozens of tables and two semi-enclosed bars, rates among the most charming outdoor patios in town. The customers are mostly young, although not exclusively, since even on Saturday night as the band tunes up family groups are found meeting for dinner. It's a potato house, of course---soup, skins, chips fried in-house as well as new, garlic mashed and stuffed with pork in sausage. Menu highlights include potato and corned beef-barley soups, lightly battered fish 'n' chips, Guinness (beef) and Irish (lamb) stews and good sandwiches.
