Carl's Drive Inn Description:
The secret to a great burger is getting it from the grill to the customer as fast as possible, says owner-cook Frank Cunetto, who has spent 20-plus years slinging burgers for the cherished few seats at his counter. But his secret is out, and at 1 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon Carl's is crammed with people waiting for nirvana. Cunetto makes his own root beer, too, served in frosty mugs. The menu is short---hot dogs, chili dogs, unexciting fries and onion rings, and made-by-hand milkshakes with a consistency that is almost sippable, a St. Louis rarity. Crisp-edged burgers are flat-grilled; the double has the best meat-to-bun ratio. Cunetto turns off the grill at 8 p.m., so plan on an early dinner.
