Warm colors and brushed steel make this sleek urban restaurant seem a world away from its Southern roots. The space is open, airy and modern, with bright windows overlooking a busy downtown street. The menu, focusing on Southern and soul-inspired dishes, is much more down-to-earth. Starters include golden fried hush puppies with pillowy-soft centers, served with a Cajun dipping sauce, as well as the addictive sweet potato fries, preferably dunked in the same sauce. Mains range from sandwiches and salads to full-size plates. The barbecue pulled pork sandwich is a good choice, the tender meat accompanied by, not drowning in, a tangy house-made sauce. Another good bet is the shrimp and cheese grits, the succulent Cajun-spiced shrimp offset by rich, buttery grits and spicy smoked sausage. The sweet-and-savory chicken and waffles is another favorite, the not-too-greasy meat holding up well atop a fluffy Belgium waffle.
