Magpie Café Description:
Located in a redeveloped brick warehouse, Magpie Café, an offshoot of long-established Magpie Catering, somehow makes the industrial, utilitarian interior warm and inviting. The brick walls are lined with brightly-colored local artwork, the cracked concrete floor is topped with cheery natural wood tables, and the expansive front-facing windows are great for people-watching. The daily-changing menu focuses on local, organic produce, farmstead cheese, humanely raised meats and sustainable seafood, and features salads, sandwiches and several entrées. For lunch, a salumi sandwich sampler is a good introduction to artisan meats, while for dinner, the Niman Ranch tri-tip is tender and rich, the accompanying red onion jam providing a sweet and tangy balance. Be sure to save room for dessert, such as the chocolate and avocado mousse with cinnamon, chili and rock salt, or grab one of the house-made cookies or fresh fruit tarts to go.
