Shabu Japanese Fondue Description:
Named after the sound of meat or vegetables swishing in steaming broth, Shabu Japanese Fondue is the city's first restaurant dedicated solely to this version of the Japanese hot pot. It's a do-it-yourself venture; tables are outfitted with a heating element, and diners cook their food themselves. The menu offers a variety of meats and seafood, each accompanied by assorted vegetables, tofu and noodles meant to be dunked in the diner's choice of broth. Our favorite is the traditional Kobe-style beef, sliced paper thin, dipped in the flavorful miso. An all-you-can-eat option is available, which includes beef, lamb and chicken, for $30, or add unlimited beer and saké for $10 more. For those who don't feel like doing the work themselves, udon and curry are also offered, as well as several types of sushi. While the menu focuses on the traditional, the ambience is contemporary, with bright, modern artwork and flat-screen TVs. Large windows overlook the busy street outside, but the space seems a bit cramped, made worse by the steam let off by a room full of boiling food and an apparent lack of ventilation.
