Orphan Breakfast House is a great place to while away a lazy morning with a newspaper and a hot cup of coffee---as long as that newspaper is an alternative weekly and the coffee is single-origin and roasted in-house. So-named as a nod to anti-chain, independent small business, Orphan prides itself on its individuality. Diners seeking artery-clogging standards will be out of luck here. Rather, the menu focuses on healthier alternatives with a global influence. Offerings include breakfast burritos, veggie scrambles and fresh fruit pancakes. Our generous portion of blueberry cornmeal pancakes were fluffy and decadent, loaded with plump berries and grilled golden brown. Other choices include a house-blended mueslix, soy chorizo plate, and brown rice and tofu with egg whites. Those needing an extra pick-me-up can order a multi-vitamin or cigarette for 75 cents.
