Phong Dinh Description:
Offers unusual meat, including squab, quail, goat, ostrich, kangaroo, frog, geoduck and ark shells. The house special is baked whole catfish.
Its repertoire of over 350 items makes Phong Dinh somewhat extraordinary on the basis of sheer variety alone. But some of the kitchen’s specialties are quite unusual indeed for a neighborhood Vietnamese eatery, such as its varied renditions of ostrich, buffalo and alligator---even thinly sliced kangaroo, marinated in a sesame-barbecue sauce and cooked tabletop. Other items, in addition to traditional Vietnamese dishes like pho, include quail with lemon grass and chili, sautéed snails with coconut milk, and curried venison. Many patrons show up for the impressive deep-fried catfish with ginger and fish sauce. The dining room is no more distinctive than a hundred other mom-and-pop eateries in this predominantly Asian business district, but this place tends to be remembered.
