Tara Asia Description:
Nick Srisawat of Tara Thai fame has taken a different approach to Asian cooking with the opening of his Tara Asia, starring a Pan-Asian menu that touches on various Asian cuisines, though most of the dishes are really Thai. That makes sense, since the local Tara Thai group has popularized this flavor-packed Southeast Asian cuisine in the DC area. But for best effect, try a mix-and-match meal, starting with the Chinese shu mai dumplings studded with sprinkles of caviar or the slender Vietnamese spring rolls and their sweetish dipping sauce. We loved the clever sarong shrimp appetizers encased in a wrap of crispy noodles---delicious---and the delicate Thai hoi jaw dumplings wrapped in tofu skin. Main course dishes include noodle and rice platters and bowls, but you may want to look at such big dishes as the crispy catfish tossed with chilies and Thai basil---a knockout! The menu includes a limited number of Asian-inspired desserts, and we recommend the banana cake with Thai custard.
