Aziza's on Main Description:
Take two grape leaves and call me in the morning. That could be the motto at this hip, happening, Lebanese-punctuated eatery, named for the family matriarch and ensconced in the clan's McGuire Park Pharmacy. Co-chef Billy Fallen made his name in food service for his Billy's Bread, served at some of Southeastern Virginia's best restaurants. He's since sold the business and teamed at Aziza's with his mom Rusty. When you enter, you'll likely see them prepping behind the deli case; they do much catering to Richmond offices and homes. Turn right and enter the old-world, wood-clad, pressed-tin ceilinged bar-dining room where you can indulge in hummus (the real deal), koosa (squash stuffed with beef, rice, cinnamon, mint and tomatoes), and those meat-filled grape leaf rolls (vegetarian versions available). At lunch there are grilled sandwiches and Southern-style chicken, potato salads and liffuts, turnips pickled pink. At weekend brunch, feast on pancetta and Fontina frittatas and Bloody Marys with shrimp. The limited dinner menu might feature rockfish or veal chop, but whatever, whenever, the ingredients are likely to be local and sustainable. And at meal's end, your check could be sweetened by a little sesame seed candy.
