Poole's Downtown Diner Description:
Poole's Downtown Diner is an eclectic upscale diner and bar in a retro 50's atmosphere. Menu items range from burgers and meatloaf to Indian (curried) chicken and vegan stews. The entertainment encompasses musical genres from Blues to Alternative. Non-smoking until 10pm.
Ashley Christensen, former chef of Raleigh's groundbreaking restaurant Enoteca Vin, is expressing her talented self at her 1940s-era diner now transformed into a hot twenty-first-century bistro. Lipstick-red barstools pop against graffiti-covered gray walls which, at closer look, are blackboards announcing the menu du jour. Take your time ordering while sipping one of the bar's creative cocktails: Truman 75, a cucumber-infused Hendrick's gin topped off with Prosecco and lemon, or Poole's Black Tea, house-made tea vodka with fresh lemon soda. Christensen's dishes are designed around the best local produce and may include chicken liver mousse with Grand Marnier or Sea Island red peas and rice for starters, then scallops with browned butter, creamed spinach and tomato relish, crisp-fried soft-shell crabs on new potato salad, or pulled lamb ribs with ricotta dumplings. Top the meal off with dulce de leche panna cotta with broiled bananas and spiced pistachios, and North Carolina strawberries with wildflower honey cream cheese on a shortbread crust.
