This downtown restaurant, a Raleigh institution since 1931, has perfected the concept of a themed eatery capable of handling large volumes of people. It's a bustling (and noisy) cavern of a place, with an ambience something of a cross between Art Deco club and corner fish market where young professionals, local politicians and out-of-towners rub shoulders. Stick with the simple seafood offerings---oysters on the half shell, steamed shrimp, oyster stew, plain grilled fish---or the baked oyster specialties (Rockefeller, Casino, and "42nd Street" with spicy butter and bacon) and you'll be happy. But more elaborate preparations can be hit-or-miss. The draft beer selection is outstanding.
