Restaurant Le Vendome Description:
Founded in the late 1950s, this establishment remains one of Quebec City's classic spots. The name and the décor (featuring a mural of Paris with the Eiffel Tower, across from the large, dark-wood bar) point to a very traditional definition of French cuisine, delivered as it probably was from the restaurant's early days. The menu features escargots and beef consommé, frogs' legs, filet of sole meunière, braised beef bourguignon, sweetbreads in cream sauce, duck à l'orange and sirloin steak in green pepper sauce. Although there is also a touch of Italian and Spanish cooking on the menu, with dishes such as garlic scampi and paella Valenciana, the wine list remains concentrated on classic châteaux and domaines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and other major French wine regions. Few surprises are to be expected, but the dishes are generally well-executed and delivered promptly by competent staff. A tiny terrace up front overlooks côte de la Montagne, a picturesque street that snakes down Cape Diamond at the heart of Old Quebec.
