Primanti Brothers Description:
Primanti opened in the '30s as a late-night food trough and watering hole for produce dockworkers in the Strip District. Today Primanti Brothers is a Pittsburgh institution although the owners have chained the concept. This Oakland shop is well located for the academic masses, and the bar here sells only beer. But the same sandwich stars: meat, oozing cheese, tomatoes, coleslaw and french fries stuffed between two slices of crusty Italian bread. Some complain that the chaining of the almost famous Primanti sandwich has shrunk the amount of meat delivered. But the greasy, tangy, salty and crunchy icon still has multi-generational appeal and a reputation that attracts visiting celebrities. Other locations.
