Primanti Brothers Description:
It started out in the '30s as a late-night food trough and watering hole for produce dockworkers. Today Primanti Brothers is a Pittsburgh institution although the owners have chained the concept. The original shop, in the Strip District, has the most authentic ambience, but all the eateries share the iconic Primanti sandwich recipe. This huge hand-held meal is stuffed with meat, oozing cheese, tomatoes, coleslaw and french fries---all held between two slices of crusty Italian bread. Some complain that the chaining of Primanti has shrunk the amount of meat delivered. But the greasy, tangy, salty and crunchy icon is still a big bite of the "burgh experience."
