Abay Ethiopian Cuisine Description:
An Ethiopian restaurant in East Liberty of Pittsburgh. In the front are 5-6 tables that you eat sitting on the floor using low tables then about 20 standard tables. Not too loud so you can talk to each other without yelling, but people are very free to talk. Not too expensive, about $15.00 per person including drink and tip.
In Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia, Abay means "Blue Nile," the largest branch of the longest river in the world and a metaphor for nourishment. A casual, laid-back gathering place, the restaurant celebrates a rich, diverse culture with authentic cuisine and a focus on the communal experience. It embraces "green" directives in environmental responsibility and sustainability. Cobalt blue at the entrance leads to quiet earth tones in the dining room. Ethiopian art and artifacts adorn the walls. If agile, sit at a backless wooden stool pulled up to a traditional mesob (low, basket-like table). If not, regular tables and chairs abound. The menu is long and best navigated by ordering a combination platter sampling a variety of menu items mounded on spongy injera flatbread. Use the injera to scoop up the food, or request utensils. Abay's menu offers preservative-free lean meats, along with vegetarian and vegan selections. BYOB, or try tea spiced with cinnamon, cardamom and cloves.
