After three decades of high-level cooking for others, chef Joseph Tambellini, with his wife Melissa, achieved the dream of opening their own business. Joseph Tambellini Restaurant occupies the former Laforet space, once a private, three-story house in Highland Park. The cozy establishment, adorned with starched linen and sophisticated tabletops, extends hospitality, comfort and good food---all in generous portions. Fine dining tables fill two floors. A top room---furnished with leather upholstery and marble-inlaid tables---accommodates private parties. The menu consists of classic Italian dishes of fish, steaks, signature homemade fresh pastas, chicken and veal. But the chef frequently adds personal twists, creating such exciting dishes as grilled wild Alaskan salmon, crusted with toasted walnuts and served over Japanese bamboo rice. Each main course comes with a creative salad of the day and a pasta course. Desserts include tiramisu and butterscotch pound cake. California and Italian labels dominate the wine list.
