In English, the Italian word "girasole" translates as "sunflower," but, here, it's also the owners' surname. But diners know the word best describes the ambience of a tiny, casual restaurant with a big sunny heart. Occupying barely 800 square feet, the rustic space shoehorns an upbeat clientele into close quarters---with a lot of cross-table talk going on. The menu delivers Italian comfort food updated for the modern palate. All is seasonal and homemade, with a long roster of pastas, plus daily fish, chicken and meat specials. Regulars target the spinach and ricotta ravioli, feather-light gnocchi and a distinctively whimsical greens and beans incorporating marinara sauce. Osso buco stars on the last weekend of each month. The humble wine menu features Italian labels. The restaurant takes no reservations, but operates a "name list" with a first-come, first-served policy.
