Every neighborhood should have a restaurant like Avenue B. Chef Chris Bonfili and his wife Jenn transformed a dingy corner diner into a warm, welcoming spot rife with urban---albeit clamorous---energy. The décor combines rustic charm with whimsy and minimalist chic. The edited seasonal menu lists three appetizers, three mains and two desserts, but choices expand with daily changing specials posted on large chalkboards. The kitchen shines in adding personality to traditional dishes. Bright twists buff comfort foods---Kobe meatloaf, with goat cheese and chive-mashed potatoes; grilled Gulf shrimp with cheesy grits; fish and thinly-sliced "chips." International influences infuse steamed mussels with garlicky tomatoes; pita bread topped with beans and greens; and fish tacos. Bonfili's love of Asian flavors punctuates several preparations, including tempura vegetables. Prices are moderate. BYOB ($5 corkage) adds another enticement. Service is professional.
