Nan Description:
Kamel Phutlek's Alouette restaurant was a trailblazer in the genre of Thai-French cuisine, and was sorely missed when the place closed. However, his University City presence makes everything better. Bring your own wine, and settle into a relaxed, civilized food experience. The room is simple and serene, with small trees in blond wood boxes forming a divider down the center, and pale green napkins echoing the green and pink beamed ceiling. Deco metal sconces light the beige walls, and the servers are more than pleasant. Coconut chicken soup with a spicy edge, and spicy squid salad can start the meal. Lemon grass-crusted salmon bears the chef's signature red curry sauce; duck breast in burgundy is rare and tender; and the sweetbreads napoleon with creamed leeks and port wine sauce is one of the best in the city. Intense blood orange sorbet or crème brûlée are good after this highly flavored cuisine.
