Square 1682 Description:
Square 1682 is adjacent to the Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, the sleek Kimpton hotel that opened in the former Art Deco American Institute of Architects building. The restaurant is a convivial spot, as ideal for power lunching as it is for a cozy dinner for two (almost too cozy---the tables are so close together that you can't help but chat with your neighbors). But it's chef Guillermo Tellez' adventurous fare that you'll remember, especially after sampling dishes such as the charred marinated octopus, one of 40 shareable plates. We also recommend the truffle-scented gnocchi in sage butter sauce, the Maine lobster tacos and the Korean hotpot. Entrées are well sized but can be pricey at $30-plus for local lamb and a roasted squab. Chef Tellez sources much of his product locally---in keeping with the hotel's green theme (it is LEED registered). An eight-page wine list gives a nod to new- and old-world vines, with most priced in the $40 and higher range. For dessert, try the cranberry upside-down cake (replaced with other fruits, depending on the season) or any of the house-made ice creams and sorbets.
