Hélène Darroze Description:
Hélène, from the southwest of France, remains faithful to the simple and authentic flavours of the products of that region. The foie gras and poultry come from the Landes, the beef from Chalosse, the salmon from the Adour river, and the milk-fed lamb from the Basque Country. Whilst upholding the values inherited from her childhood, she cleverly combines them with imagination and mischievousness, always listening to her emotions when cooking and displaying a real, particularly feminine sensitivity.
Although the food in the tapas restaurant of Hélène Darroze is worthy of its rating, the service leaves much to be desired and, unfortunately, takes away from the dining experience. Tapas, though, are innovative, and many showcase the flavors of the chef's home: the Southwest of France. There are different treatments of foie gras, a lovely tuna with smashed potatoes and black olives, and lotte cheeks in a spicy sauce with hazelnuts. There are also delicious desserts, from the obligatory molten chocolate cake to an authentic baba soaked in Armagnac rather than rum. If good service is not imperative, this is the place to go.
