Café Pro Bono's comfortable room just off the California Avenue shopping district, recalls the Italian-American restaurants present before Palo Alto's recent restaurant boom. Without earth tones, trendy sconces or frivolous flower bursts, its charm is in the jubilant chatter of regulars, the caring staff which offers its full attention and a traditional menu that answers the call for a romantic dinner or a weeknight respite from a harried day. Susan's Downfall, the unofficial signature dish available as a starter or entrée, boasts plump raviolis with Gorgonzola sauce crowned with a sprinkling of crispy toasted almonds. A peppery grilled wild boar sausage starter rests on a bed of creamy flageolet beans. Pastas and entrées don't surprise, but do satisfy.
