Pomme Frite Description:
Owner Jean-Claude Constant has made this the place to drop in if you need a hit of the authentic French-Belgian bistro experience. There's great people-watching from the little sidewalk patio or through the lace window curtains that might have come straight from Bruges. The food completes the sensation that you have somehow stumbled from the desert into a small town somewhere in France or Belgium and found a really good local café. Constant is Belgian and mussels are the main event, with a choice of eight different preparations. But Wednesday through Monday (Tuesday the bistro is closed) there is a nightly special. The roster remains fairly constant so if you have a yearning for beef Stroganoff, Thursday is your night. There is a good value prix-fixe menu that changes monthly (and isn't offered on Saturdays) and a satisfying range of à la carte items. When dessert comes around the pot de crème, floating islands or Belgian chocolate mousse (all on the prix-fixe menu) are equally good---try any or all of them. On the other hand, there is a demon baba au rhum on the regular menu that is worth a walk on the à la carte side.
