Melvyn's Description:
Tucked into the historic, intimate Ingleside Inn, Melvyn's is a beloved restaurant with a menu that has hardly changed, except for the prices, since it opened in 1975---and it was old-fashioned then. But it's the ambience, not the food, which keeps customers coming back. The dining room is timelessly elegant, with crystal chandeliers, linen-clad candlelit tables and plush, comfortable chairs. The Garden Room flows seamlessly from it and offers a less formal but equally attractive setting. The signature entrée is veal Ingleside, topped with avocado and a particularly creamy mousseline sauce, but the steaks figure prominently. Many dishes are prepared tableside by a tuxedoed waiter who has been flambéing here for many years. Practice, unfortunately, hasn't made totally perfect. The wilted spinach salad is good, as is the steak Diane, but the crêpes are inconsistent and best avoided. It's a mixed crowd of old and young, perhaps because, in spite of all the trappings of luxury, Melvyn's also has a low-priced prix-fixe offering alongside the pricier à la carte menu. Happy non-foodies also fill the dance floor at the rear of the adjacent Casablanca Lounge (the bar serves topnotch martinis).
