Downtown 140 Description:
Downtown 140 is housed in a former nineteenth-century market with rough limestone and exposed-brick walls (the decibel in the dining room can be overwhelming) yet the ambience is old-world. Of course, chef-owner Shawn Monday's seasonal cuisine and co-owner Kurt Nygaard's wine list are decidedly today. The tapas-style menu is divided among Smallest, Small and Not-So-Small plates. And despite an occasional Asian accent---some wasabi guacamole here, a beef dumpling there---most of Monday's creations sing a bistro-style tune. The morel mushroom tart with Lake Erie Creamery goat cheese is wonderfully earthy. And the duck confit with rhubarb chutney is sweetly lush, while the crispy organic chicken comes off as rich and decadent. Although the cuisine is clearly the star of the show, Downtown 140's wine list---which boasts over 400 labels---and desserts are not to be taken for granted. Try any of pastry chef Kim Horner's creations and you're sure to walk away a believer.
