Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill Description:
A festive, see-and-be-seen vibe abounds at this sprawling, contemporary, horseshoe-shaped dining compound anchored by a renovated boathouse at the west side of Oakland's Lake Merritt. The restaurant's owners have a knack for choice locations---they also own the Beach Chalet and adjoining Park Chalet at the foot of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, with views cresting the Pacific. The Lake Chalet's dashing lakeside setting is as movie perfect, whether indoors in one of two dressed-up and welcoming dining rooms, at the 80-foot-long marble bar or in one of three private dining rooms, or outdoors on the vast heated dock with its own bar, separate menu and occasional gondola; once twilight hits, the moon rises and Lake Merritt's famed twinkling periphery lights are lit, the effect can be quite breathtaking. Seafood plates here can't quite match up to the view, though we were more than satisfied with the greaseless fried calamari and addictive house-made cocktail sauce, meaty crab cakes, and olive oil-poached halibut over creamed spinach and artichokes. For upscale value, hit the restaurant's happy hours and event nights---taco Tuesdays, crab Fridays---to rub shoulders with a boisterous combination of local suits, movers and shakers and the neighborhood's eclectic and vibrant crowd. We also recommend sampling the beer menu hailing from the sister Park Chalet's microbrewery.
