Burma Superstar Description:
Drawing on the success of its original San Francisco location, Burma Superstar has brought its samusa soup, tea leaf and rainbow salads, cool Superstar noodles, savory curries and large menu of other favorites to Oakland (there is also a third location in Alameda, and a trendier version of the restaurant, called B Star Bar, near the original spot on Clement). What sets this Temescal location apart is its more stylish, hidden vibe and high energy---wait times are significantly less than those in the city, and low lighting, dark wood, accent drapes and lounge music set a tucked-away, romantic tone. Family-style portions are so generous and reasonably priced, however, that larger groups are often found clustered here, and as there are no reservations taken for the small dining room, a communal table and quick, crafty servers help with efficient turnaround. Influenced by Indian, Thai, Chinese and Laotian flavors, Burma Superstar's salads, noodles, stews and curries are fresh, dynamic and distinctive, layered with spices and tang that satisfy a range of palates. Vegetarians will be especially pleased. Note: There is no poodi, the restaurant's notable yellow potato curry, at this location.
