Hiro's Yakko-San Description:
At this rustic-looking eatery (which, late at night, draws chefs from earlier-closing Asian restaurants all over town), the extensive menu does have a sashimi section, including unusual preparations like yamakake tuna, raw tuna over Japanese potato, or nuta-ae, raw fish and scallion with a savory sweet miso-mustard sauce. But there's no sushi whatsoever. Rather, the emphasis here is on small plates of authentic Japanese home cooking---comfort food favorites, some, like shrimp tempura or beef tataki, familiar, but most not to be found at Miami's other Japanese places. While unusual, however, almost all are totally accessible: Kalbi yakiniku (Korean-influenced barbecue short ribs), red pepper-spiked lamb steak with saké and soy, even spicier pork with kimchi, deep-fried crispy bok choy with garlicky soy dressing, kaki-age (a tempura of battered grated burdock and carrots), tender beef slices with garlic stems, sautéed lotus roots, rich marinated and grilled pork belly, and a wide variety of Asian noodle or onigiri (stuffed rice ball) dishes. At 2 a.m. all the above beat fast-food burgers, but they're delightful discoveries at any hour.
