Racks Italian Bistro & Market Description:
In Italy fifty years ago, diners would have gone to a trattoria for a real (if casual) restaurant meal, to an enoteca for a glass or bottle of wine accompanied by small snacks, and to a pizzeria for the obvious. Food shoppers sought a salumeria for cold cuts, a latteria for cheeses, and an alimentari for packaged groceries. But modern Italy has loosened up, and Racks goes the nation one better for one-stop shopping and dining. The stylishly rustic place is all of the above: one can have wine and a snack (like a plate of cream-centered burrata di mozzarella with truffle honey and Amarena cherries) or a full trattoria-type pasta, meat or fish entrée, and then buy the olive oils, prepared sauces, etc., that made the dish, to take home. But the absolute must-haves come from the coal-fired pizza oven. The pies are more expensive than at other artisan Miami pizza joints, but the thin, beautifully burn-blistered crusts alone justify the price. For proof, try the basic Fior di Latte, featuring spicy-sweet tomato sauce, fresh cow's milk mozzarella, Parmigiano-Reggiano, EVOO and sea salt. Other pluses: an outdoor deck on the mangrove-bordered Intracoastal Waterway (with docking for diners arriving by boat).
