Stissing House Restaurant and Tavern Description:
Stissing House, a tavern and restaurant established in 1782, features a rare domed-ceiling ballroom, original Dutch colonial framing and beautiful hand-hewn timbers. Marquis de Lafayette and George Washington made appearances here and society balls were held in the ballroom. Though the place deteriorated to a rowdy bar and eventually closed, Stissing House has been lovingly and expensively refurbished as a restaurant and as a center for community activities in Pine Plains. The building is filled with country antiques (all for sale), old photos, historic ledgers and a variety of cozy rooms to dine in---two with fireplaces---a wine room with walls covered in wood from fermenting vats. Try the lively tavern room with a great old bar. Specialty pizzas, cooked in the wood-fired grill and brick oven, include the thick crust, roasted garlic, ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan and pesto white pizza. Another taste pleaser: pan-seared sea scallops and spinach salad topped with caramelized red onions and a warm mango vinaigrette. The grilled salmon BLT is another wise choice. Stissing offers a good wine list featuring the outstanding New York state Millbrook wines.
